Gyantse in Tibet about 3950m
“The Summit Royal” is the name of a rock rising abruptly from the plane, which has been fortified since early antiquity – the fort (Dzong) which crowns the rock dates from the 14th. Century. Gyantse Tibet was once the third largest city, but nowadays, its status is greatly diminished. However, it retains much of its original atmosphere and is one of the least inspired Chinese cities in Tibet. There is no trace of Gyantse before the 14th century, but it quickly became the center of a fiefdom with powerful connections to the Sakya order and dominated the trade routes of the wool and wood from Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan since centuries. In 1440 Gyantse’s most impressive architectural achievements had been completed – the Kumbum Dzong Chode monastery and Pelkor.
